A Truncated 'Potted' History of the Home Education Movement (in the USA)
It started with the Pioneers: Those individuals who decided to buck the
system and realize that they must be in control of their families
educational path. The driving force behind the pioneers was educational
quality and in many cases faith based considerations. These were the
homeschoolers of the 80's who looked at their hero's like the Moore's,
Farenga, Holt, Gatto, and others who were willing to take the arrows in the
Next came the Settler's who liked what the pioneers had done and wanted
what they had created. For the most part they shared the same educational
goals of greater quality and maintaining family value systems. Be advised
that the family value system did not mean exclusively faith based (even
though a majority may claim this) but also non-faith based value systems. These families still practiced homeschooling much like the Pioneers without
the fear factor.
Finally we are in the what I call the Refugee stage. These are families
that are escaping the system for other than educational values. Many of
the reasons include safety issues, postponement of school entry, health
issues and not in favor of school policies like the abuse of zero
tolerance. In many cases homeschooling is the last resort, not the first
choice. The tendency of these families is to school at home and not be as
strong in participating in the true homeschool community that provided us
with comfort, support and guidance.
It is my sincerest hope that we can nudge the community back to the
determination, creativity, energy, and success of the Pioneers and Settlers.
