Technology Activity Suggestions
by Beverley Paine, August 2022
A member of my The Educating Parents Homeschooling and Unschooling group requested ideas for writing on her child's learning plan for Stage 4 (Year 7&8) Technology.
I had a quick look at Technologies for those year levels on the Australian Curriculum website and came up with these off the top of my head suggestions for activities that would satisfy the outcomes listed:
- Visit a rural museum and chat about how equipment used in the past has evolved and changed over time, what is used now, to do the same or similar task.
- Interview an elderly relative or friend about how health services have changed over their lifes.
- Create a working model of something that interests them, or a toy that moves, etc.
- Make a food product from scratch - eg cheese from milk, bread from grinding wheat.
- Visit a food factory to see how food is manufactured safely (eg chocolate, bakery, winery)
- Make a simple piece of furniture, a bird house, etc.
Make a piece of jewellery using metal or plastics.
- Sew something, repair/mend.
- Learn how to operate various components that allow us to connect to the internet, compare reliability
- Use internet to source and check accuracy of information
- Use software to prepare a budget, or track financial information for a project, use a spreadsheet
- Come up with design suggestions that are more user friendly for ability levels for different tools/gadgets we use
- Critique (write a review) of a computer game or app mentioning functionality, storyline, gameplay, environment, etc
- Develop a digital game or program a robot

Welcome to the World of Home Education
and Learning without School!
We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine

Home education is a legal alternative
to school education in Australia.
State and Territory governments are responsible
for regulating home education and have different
requirements, however home educating families
are able to develop curriculum and learning programs
to suit the individual needs of their children.
