Achieving Standards and Covering the Curriculum

Marrissa asked: "How much of the standardised stuff, etc, home educating parents think is important and how much of it is left out of the way you teach your kids."
Home educators generally cover much the same material as schools do but in very different ways and at the student's pace rather than being spoon fed it in chunks that make it easier for schools to manage.
The main thrust of primary education is to get the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic - everyone wants this for their children. Home educators put a lot of emphasis on finding resources to work with individual learning styles and needs - something that doesn't happen appropriately or consistently in the classroom.
The other benefit that home education bestows is a natural broadening of the curriculum through everyday life experiences at home and in the community and the wider environment, rather than the contrived simulations set up in the classroom to approximate real learning opportunities. General knowledge and a range of necessary life skills are much easier to grow and cover in the home education environment.
By the time the family reaches high school level as home educators they have become confident at finding and creating resources to cover the more specialised subjects. The internet and communication technologies make it so much easier for children of any age to study more thoroughly and in depth any subject or topic at any level, including university level.
Registered families need to demonstrate they are complying with the regulations, providing their children with an appropriate education and social opportunities.
The ability to specialise early together with the increased ability to acquire a broad education combined with the increased attention from more experienced others keen to help the child learn naturally translates into quality educational experiences.
Matching what schools do when is not the aim of most home educating families, although all aim to provide their children with an equivalent, if not better, education before the child becomes an adult. Achieving benchmarks and standards are important but considered flexible regarding the timing: what is more important is working with the individual students learning styles and needs, allowing them to progress at a pace that ensures they understand and master the content and skills before moving forward.
Home education is a commitment and it's challenging but it is also immensely rewarding.
