Handwriting Technique

The handwriting technique is the way in which the hand and fingers move. This varies according to the handwriting style. There are two distinct manipulative techniques people develop:

  • finger writing as required, e.g. print script where the thumb and finger do most of
    the work,
  • and handwriting as required, e.g. looped cursive where the hand is involved in a
    smooth, flowing movement.

The technique may also involve aspects relating to:

  • body position, which should be erect, but not stiff in most situations;
  • position of arm, wrist and hand, which needs to be comfortable and flexible;
  • paper position, usually different for print and cursive writing;
    grip and type of writing instrument.

Children will develop their own unique style. Work with this, rather than against it, to
help build confidence and skills.
