I was Home Educatedadults sharing their thoughts about being homeschooled and unschooled during childhoodEdited by Beverley Paine, April 2014 38 probing questions asked by parents just starting out on their home educating journey together with answers from over a dozen 20-30 year old people who were fully or substantially home educated. Questions such as 'what aspects did you enjoy about being home educated' and 'what was the hardest part' as well as 'do you wish you'd been schooled differently' and 'will you home educate your children' tease out a range of frank and honest answers from these people, many of them already parents, some already home educating their children. Questions about friends and socialisation, regrets, and what best prepared these young people for adult life reveal both the advantages and disadvantages of the home educating life style. What comes through, again and again, are the strong themes of self-knowledge, self-motivation, self-confidence and self-regulation. And 'freedom', being free to learn whenever and in whatever way suits the individual best. Don't be tempted to flip to the end of the eBook and sneak a peak at the last question: what these home educated people would say to families just starting out 'that would help them understand it from a child's perspective'... Enjoy all of the responses and take from it what you need to feel inspired! If you are, or know of someone who was, home educated either completely or substantially, and would like to complete the questionnaire and contribute to updates to this free eBook, please email Beverley. and Learning without School! We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
