It's Okay to Not Push Kids to Learn... by Beverley Paine, June 2013 Home educating my children frequently made me examine many of my parenting practices. Back in 2013, I was musing on why we push kids to learn this or that or whatever, and I asked myself, why are we in such a hurry to impose on them all sorts of things we think they should know and be able to do? Why do children have to learn to do things, especially things don't want to do, and especially when they are young? Like most parents I would worry that I'm not setting an example of consistent behaviour, or that skipping homeschool lessons or not finishing activities will mean they won't ever be able to commit to anything in the future, or that we're encouraging laziness... It's way too easy to judge our children's behaviour and extrapolate the consequences far into the future, giving them undeserved - and distracting - prominence. |
