Your Libary is a Source to Hours of Free Entertainment

I am a huge fan of public libraries! Not only are they great for sourcing lots of wonderful books and other educational resources but the can also be viewed as a place of free entertainment. Learn to view the library you would the movies - there are stories in every corner just waiting to be discovered!

Investigate any special programs for children offered by your local library. They may join forces with local bookstores especially during the school holidays. Or you might like to investigate those separately. Some offer story hours, book clubs and other services to their clients and/or customers. If possible, have yourself placed on a mailing list and ask for them to send you notices of special events for children. Your state or local writing group might have a mailing list too - I receive regular invitations to book launches from my state based writers association. It is a great way to meet authors and to hear about how they develop their story and polish their writing craft. Getting to meet an author is an exhilarating moment for any budding writer or avid reader. Why not ask how much they would charge (perhaps they'd be happy to come for free!) to come and talk at your next homeschooling group gathering?

Watch the newspapers for advertisements for writers' festivals, special bookstore events, literary festivals, drama productions and pantomimes, puppet shows, poetry readings: any kind of performance that celebrates reading, writing, listening and speaking.

We always kept an eye on visiting performances at the local school by subscribing to the school newsletter. Most were open to the general public for the same entrance fee as the students. Some schools are very willing to accommodate homeschoolers in their district to special programs, such as author visits. Talk to the Principal or English teacher.

And don't forget to check the notice board in the library or ask the librarian if there are any literary or performance events planned soon for your area.
